New Report Confirms that NJ Needs More Affordable Housing
The cost of housing in New Jersey is high for everyone, but a new report finds lower-income families are being crushed by a shortage of affordable places to live. Arnold Cohen, the senior policy advisor for the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey, said the report finds that there are one affordable and available apartments for every 100 families earning $30,000 a year. Outlet Center to be Redeveloped with Affordable Housing
Flemington Borough Council passed a resolution on Jan. 24 entering into an agreement with Hoboken Brownstone Company to redevelop Liberty Village, turning the nation’s first outlet center into a mixed use housing complex. The complex will include 140 market-rate townhouses offered for sale, 55 affordable-housing rental apartments and around 180 market-rate rental apartments. Read more about the redevelopment project. Has Bergen County Ended Homelessness?
Officials in Bergen County are hoping that this year, as it has in the five previous years, the county will have reached “functional zero” for chronic homelessness and veteran homelessness. Functional Zero is a metric created by the nonprofit Community Solutions and which later influenced the federal government’s own definition. Far from meaning the county is not experiencing homelessness, the formula essentially assures that capacity exists to house everyone within a prioritized category relatively quickly.
